Study: As gas prices go up, auto deaths drop (AP)

High gas prices are posted at a Shell gas station in San Mateo, Calif., Thursday, July 10, 2008. The average roadside price for gasoline on Thursday stood at $4.104 a gallon - just a hair below the record $4.108 hit Monday, according to auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma)AP - High gas prices could turn out to be a lifesaver for some drivers. The authors of a new study say gas prices are causing driving declines that could result in a third fewer auto deaths annually, with the most dramatic drop likely to be among teen drivers.

Whether you're a Professional Athlete, a weekend enthusiast or even a baby boomer who refuses to age disgracefully, it's vital to understand the damage that overexercising can do to us. That is, overexercising without giving extra care to our bodies.

There's so much conflicting information out there that the average sports person can become so confused that it's easier to go by gut and just eat as well as possible. My own and a close family member's experience will hopefully shed some light on what too much exercise can do.

My brother was and still is a keen weekend semi professional athlete. He competed in everything as a kid and now, in his mid 40s and a masters games competitor he still believes his body is as strong as it was back then. Each knee has been operated on, his shoulder also has gone under the knife, he still experiences pain, and every flu going around seems to hit him - and hard. His eating habits are poor and he takes no vitamins or antioxidants.

I was an 'aerobics queen' many years ago. After swollen knees, serious bruising, muscle cramps and aches and general feeling of lethargy that set in after the endorphin high of each workout I knew something had to change. I buy bulk cinnamon powder extract learned that after every hard workout the body would undergo a higher than usual free radical attack. It's while this attack is going on that our immune system effectiveness can drop dramatically.

Sometimes this may only last 24 hours but it's during this time that we are most susceptible to illness. And when we're susceptible to illness, degeneration starts to make it's mark by leading to disease.

Studies have proven that many endurance runners and body builders will come down with some kind of viral illness just before or after an event. If these athletes ignore their illness and head straight into the event the intense damage that can be caused while their immune systems are down can be quite worrying.

Jockeys particularly need to be aware of what they're doing to their body. So many of them keep their bodies dramatically underweight, to such a point that they'll steam themselves in a sauna to sweat out every last drop of excess fluid just before a race. When running a race in such a condition, if they fall and suffer an injury their body takes far longer to heal. Many retired jockeys have never completely regained their health.

Physical injuries are obviously common amongst sports people which means that a higher level of antioxidants are required to battle the free radical damage that is occurring while their body is trying to heal itself.

If you're an athlete, the right levels of carbs, proteins and fats in your diet is absolutely essential. That goes without saying. But consider taking a high quality antioxidant and multi mineral.
